About the artist Claudia Sottner
from Austria (Schwaz in Tyrol)
I would describe myself foremost as a connoisseur of the art of living with a healthy dose of rationality. Drawing has always been an important part of my life and comes naturally to me. My earliest "masterpieces" were mostly cartoon drawings. Gradually, I developed an interest for portraits and realistic drawings. After some interruptions, I started towards a more professionall path and since 2008 I run my own website.
I am a completely self-taught artist. It is a mixture of talent and more practice.
My specialty is the realistic drawing with graphite pencil and colored pencil.
Whereas my focus used to be on realistic portrait drawings, my interest has changed to "creative realism". Portraits are still an essential component, but there is more space for expression and the story behind the subject.
For this reason, my works are currently divided into two major themes. "The Space in Between", in the main gallery, mostly deals with the perception of thoughts and feelings under various circumstances. It reflects a moment in which time seems to stand still, where you live completely in the moment and experience an almost trance-like state, a kind of limbo.
The second theme "Postcards" includes smaller drawings and sketches, depicting various personal experiences, impressions and places I have seen. Both series will be enlarged over time.
Another desire is it to tell background stories and give a deeper insight into my ideas and how my drawings are created. Therefore, there is now the brand new category "Behind the Scenes".
I also offer drawing tips and will expand my tutorial section to help people who want to learn how to draw. With a little help everything is easier. You are welcome to join me on my artistic journey and let me know if I can do something for you.
Upon request, I still do some commissioned drawings upon. You can also check out some of my more or less artsy t-shirt designs on Spreadshirt - EU and Spreadshirt - US.
A very flexible work and lifestyle allows me to be largely independent of location. In the last years, I have lived in Switzerland, Germany and Austria.
My work has been shown in several exhibitions like the Art Salzburg (A) 09 and Mannheim, Germany, 2010 via Gallery Boehner; and various local exhibitions (see pictures below).
In addition to that, some of my drawings were published in art books (ARTEDITION - contemporary art 2015 & kunSTücke - Works of contemporary artists 2014).
